Managing and operating ICT
SchoolBox
- https://schoolbox.com.au
- Teachers, parents and students can use this comprehensive Learning Management System that includes, roll marking, lesson artefacts, uploading of assessments and completed student work, database of various school relating information such as student’ s IEP’s etc
- All operating systems and mobile devices
- $23 per student per year
- K-12 Students, Staff and Parents
- This resource is included in Capability 5 ‘Understand ICT systems ‘ as students and teachers learn how to navigate the different integrated systems of LMS.
- Yildirim, Reigeluth, Kwon, Kageto, & Shao, (2014) observed a range of benefits and limitations with a range of learning management systems, some of these include, teachers and parents could monitor student progress, customised lesson design for both groups and individual students. Some of the limitations identified included a lack of interoperability with other applications.
Speed Light Timing Light Gates
- http://swiftperformance.com/products/speedlight/
- Timing light gates are used to accurately measure reaction time, acceleration and deceleration across a range of different sporting activities, recorded data is stored in cloud storage.
- IPad and iPhone devices
- $8650 for speedstarter plus bundle
- Secondary PDHPE students
- This resource is included in Capability 5 ‘Select and use hardware and software’ as students learn how to operate sport science hardware and software relating to physical performance and make judgements on how to manage and store the relevant data
- Though evidenced by it’s superior accuracy over handheld stopwatches to assess sprinting performance in athletes, the high costs of timing light gates may be prohibitive for many school based settings (Hetzler, Stickley, Lundquist, & Kimura, 2008). The technical knowledge needed to operate the hardware and software of this resource may also limit student access.
Ipad Air 2
- http://www.apple.com/au/ipad-air-2/
- Ipad hardware and educational apps provides an interactive platform for student activities and learning within a wide variety of educational contexts.
- Mobile Device, IOS operating system
- 128 gb wifi only - $719
- K-12 Students
- This resource is included in Capability 5 ‘Select and use hardware and software’ AND ‘Manage digital data’ as teachers and students learn to utilise iPad hardware and accessories, and engage in relevant educational apps and how to manage their data.
- Ryes (2004) suggest that iPads and relevant literacy apps can have a positive effect on student learning outcomes and improve the motivation of students. More recently, it has been found that iPads are can promote student class participation and collaboration (Mango, 2015). However, as with timing light gates, the costs of acquiring class sets could be too expensive for some settings.
Dropbox
- www.dropbox.com
- Dropbox is a web based file hosting service which maintains individual’s documents and files that is synchronised on any device with sharing capabilities.
- All internet enabled operating systems and devices
- No cost
- Upper Primary and Secondary Students, and Teachers
- This resource is included in Capability 5 ‘Manage digital data’ as students learn to manage, maintain, shared folders and files across different operating systems and devices.
- There are both benefits and limitations to cloud storage applications like dropbox, benefits include multiple users can access files from anywhere (that has internet access) at anytime, lower operational and upfront costs and simplicity of use for students (Sadiku, Musa, & Momoh (2014). Some limitations to users include, loss of full autonomy over data management, security and privacy threats especially if data is stored offshore (Ren, Wang, & Wang, 2012).
