Australian Bureau of Statistics
- http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/[email protected]/Lookup/1370.0main+features252013
- Provides Stage 6 PDHPE students with a range of statistics relating to the health of Australian’s
- Internet enabled operating systems and mobile devices (requires Adobe Flash Player, but still provides static images)
- No cost
- Stage 6 PDHPE Students and Teachers
- This resource is included in Capability 2 ‘Define and plan information searches’ as it challenges students to specifically define and plan information searches within a very comprehensive database for their Health Priorities Unit.
- According to ABS (2016) the Australian Bureau of Statistics is Australia’s official statistical database. The data on this site is of significant value to learning as it claims to provide reliable information for the Australian government and the community (ABS, 2010), however, the ABS has had criticism in the media as they have allegedly conceded errors in some of their data (Greber, 2015).
McCrindle
- http://mccrindle.com.au/research-resources#infographics
- Visually presents a variety of information relating to Australian demographics such as age care, composition of Australian population and population of those married.
- All internet enabled operating systems and mobile devices
- No cost
- Years 7-12 PDHPE Students and Teachers
- This resource is included in Capability 2 ‘Select and evaluate data and information’ as it provides a range of data in the form of Infographics, videos and presentations for students to locate, interpret, analyse and evaluate.
- Infographics are visually attractive to the learner, the use of infographics in education has been found to promote student learning, enables learners to retain information (Yildirim, 2016, pp. 106-107), and improves the learning attitude of students (Çifçi, 2016). The layout on an infographic allows learners to easily identify and process key pieces of information. However, consideration needs to be given to the amounts of text on an infographic as readers can lose interest if there are too many words (Yildirim, 2016, pp. 108).

Strava
- https://www.strava.com/about
- Social networking site/app based on individual’s sharing exercise data. Students are able to analyse and compare exercise performance variables.
- All internet enabled operating systems and mobile devices – GPS enabled device necessary. App available for Android and IOS
- Website free, app free, additional features available on app at $60 a year
- Years 7-12 PDHPE Students and Teachers
- This resource is included in Capability 2 ‘Locate, generate and access data and information’ as it provides students an interactive social networking platform to locate, create and access exercise data and information
- The Strava website and mobile app provides a range of benefits to student learning as it enables sharing of exercise activities and also may further promote exercise beyond the lesson (Pringle, 2015). However, caution is needed as more conclusive research is needed to determine the effectiveness of smart phone technology relating to personal health (Shah, 2014).

- Provides Stage 6 PDHPE students global epidemiological data for various population groups across time.
- All internet enabled operating systems and mobile devices
- No cost, under Creative Commons license
- Stage 5 and 6 PDHPE students and Teachers
- This resource is included in Capability 2 ‘Select and evaluate data and information’ as it provides a wide variety of epidemiological data and trends for students to locate, interpret, analyse and evaluate.
- Gapminder World utilises a range of epidemiological data and presents it in an animation form in which students can manipulate how and which data is animated. Berney & Betrancourt (2016) in their meta-analysis revealed that the use of animation is effective in student learning. However, Lowe (2003) explains the importance of specific instructional direction for students when they engage with animation otherwise animation may lose its educational value.
